Customer Question – Leatherjackets or Chafer Grubs?

Q. “Hi, Year after year my precious lawn is devastated by badgers trying to get to the Leatherjackets. I understand that if I can control the Leatherjackets the badgers will leave the lawn alone and that I need nematodes to achieve this. At long last I’ve found a supplier of nematodes. Could you please advise what I need and the quantity for a normal size garden, to enable me to place an order?” Many thanks Penney

A. Thanks for the message and yes we supply Leatherjacket Nematodes in 100 sqm packs so you just need to work out how big your lawn is? There are TWO lawn pests that attract badgers – chafer grubs and leatherjackets so are you sure it is leatherjackets? Best to check where the badgers are digging but lifting a small piece of turf near where they are digging. You will either find small white chafer grubs or you will fine grey / green leatherjackets that look like caterpillars i.e. no legs. If it is leatherjackets you might also see lots of Daddy Long Legs emerging from the lawn because this is happening now.

Once we confirm what pest it is we can supply the nematodes and treating before the end of Sept is the ideal time to treat.
