Customer Question – Is this Leatherjacket Damage?
Q. “Hello there and I hope I can pick your brains re : leatherjackets? My lawn has had chafer grubs, about 10 yrs ago but no problems since (to my knowledge anyway!). At the end of July this year, streaks of brown dead grass appeared – see picture below. I immediately referred to your website and went through the excellent blog and as you suggest, I took up a patch of turf to find 2 leatherjackets. However, I thought I should wait a week or two, and as you predict, the crane flies appeared. Should i wait a little longer for the new larvae to hatch or treat the leatherjackets now?” Mike by email
A. Thanks for the message and sorry you have leatherjackets after chafer grubs. Aim to treat with Leatherjacket Nematodes 2 weeks after the peak of the daddy long legs emergence. Depending on how bad the infestation is you could also try and squeeze another treatment in depending on how mild our autumn is i.e. if we have a very mild November, do an extra treatment before the daytime soil temp drops below 10c to control any late developing leatherjackets – see our ASAP and Autumn Special Offer. I hope this helps. Kind regards Jon @ Green Gardener
