Customer Question – Is this lawn pest Chafer Grub?
Q. “Last year the lawn got dug up by crows and magpies from mid Sept onwards. In Spring we’ve dressed it with topsoil, re-seeded and it’s been healthy through the summer but we are now seeing the occasional brown patch. Digging under one of the brown patches we’ve found these grubs. Are they chafer grubs, leather jackets or something else. These were in a fairly small area about 1 ft square. Whatever they might be, what do you recommend we need to do in order to avoid last years invasion of crows. If nematodes are the answer what is the lead time for delivering and when is the right time to apply please.” Many thanks Sue Valentine
A. Thanks for the message and these are Chafer Grubs. Looking at the size of them they are fairly mature, so ideally you want to treat now with Chafer Killer Nematodes to kill the grubs already present and then treat again in early October to clear any late developing grubs. You could wait and just do 1 application i.e. late Sept but you run the risk of the crows and magpies discovering them in the meantime. We do do a Double Delivery which will deliver one pack now and a 2nd automatically w/c 02/10. Kind regards Jon @ Green Gardener
