Here at Green Gardener we specialise in natural treatments to help keep your garden looking its best. Our environmentally friendly products range from natural pest control to organic fertiliser. Read on to discover more about the natural way to keep your lawn in healthy condition over the winter.
Lawn feed
Just like people, lawns can be more susceptible to disease during the cold winter months. Feeding your lawn in autumn will provide it with essential nutrients. These will make it stronger, healthier and better equipped to survive the winter unharmed.
Yellow-brown patches known as Fusarium patch disease are caused by a fungus. If these areas appear, they should be raked, spiked, re-seeded and fed, ideally with an organic lawn fertiliser.
Moss control
Moss can be a problem on your lawn when it spores around April time, then again in September. As grass growth slows down in autumn the moss will try to take advantage, so action is required.
The best way to deal with moss is by raking or scarifying, preferably before it spores. To help the grass recover, an autumn lawn feed and moss killer is generally advisable.
Mowing your lawn in autumn
With less hours of sunlight in autumn, you lawn will grow much more slowly. That means you won’t need to mow it as often, but it’s best not to stop altogether. Regular mowing will help make your lawn denser, and also helps to keep weeds at bay.
During Autumn your grass will want to absorb as much sunshine as it can get. To give it a better chance, it’s a good idea to raise the blade height on your mower. Around 2 or 2.5 inches is advisable, and try to make sure your blades are nice and sharp.
Scarifying
It’s important to scarify your lawn in autumn using a light, fine-tined rake or scarifying tool. This will get rid of any dead grass, moss or roots that could affect the health of your grass. Along with autumn lawn feed and moss killer, it’s ideal preparation for the winter.
Keep your lawn clear
Dead leaves can prevent sunlight getting to your grass, and over a period of time that could kill it. During autumn it’s essential to clear your lawn of leaves on a regular basis. Fallen leaves also make a great addition to your compost.
Weed control
An autumn lawn feed and moss killer will help control weeds. That’s because it’s harder for them to infiltrate a healthy lawn. Any you find should be treated with a biodegradable weedkiller or removed by hand, making sure you include the root.
