How to Use a Weed Killer Spray Without Harming Plants
An essential item for any gardener is a weed killer pump sprayer. Whatever the size or style of your garden, weeds will always find a way through. As keen gardeners will know, pulling them out by hand can be back-breaking work. Which is why many of us turn to a garden weed sprayer.
Here at Green Gardener we’ve been supplying customers with safe but effective products for over 25 years. Our natural fertilisers and weed killers are harmless to children, pets and wildlife. Read on to discover more about the best way to use these products in your garden.
Tips to avoid harming your plants
Most regular gardeners would agree that a pump sprayer is the most effective way of treating weeds. Using a pump sprayer you can mix exactly the quantity of weed killer you need. As this helps to avoid waste, it’s generally a cheaper option. Moreover, the vacuum created by the pump allows you to spray continuously for longer periods.
However, spray drift can be a problem. And the last thing you want to do is harm the plants you’re trying to grow. So here are some things you can do to help target weeds while avoiding your cared for plants.
Don’t use fine spray
Choose a garden weed sprayer with an adjustable nozzle and set it to a wetter spray if possible. This will give you better control over where the spray lands. Even if it’s not windy, fine spray is much more likely to drift.
Choose a calm day
Try and treat your weeds on a day when the air is still. If that isn’t possible, use cardboard or a plastic sheet to protect vulnerable plants while spraying.
Avoid contamination
Sprayers and watering cans should be thoroughly rinsed after they’ve been used for weed killer. Alternatively, have two pump sprayers and use a marker pen to designate one of them for weed killer.
Keep away from treated areas
If you’ve recently treated a fairly large area, make sure to avoid walking there for a while. You can easily pick up chemicals on your shoes and transfer them to other parts of your garden.
Choose a cloudy day
The damage caused by spray drift can be worse when conditions are warm and sunny. For that reason it’s best to pick a cloudy day to use your weed killer pump sprayer.
